The big lake at Kenisee Lakes Thousand Trails

A quiet lake-side retreat

Kenisee Lakes Thousand Trails is a beautiful RV campground located in Jefferson, Ohio. Only 10 minutes south of Interstate 90, the campground is nestled in the heart of Ohio woodlands and sports a large recreational lake, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy the great outdoors.

The campground has 119 campsites, with a variety of options to choose from - both pull-through and back-in. Whether you're looking for a heavily wooded site, a clear and open site so you can get your Starlink connected, or a highly desirable site with a lake view, you're sure to find the perfect spot and friendly people here at the campground. The park is open from late April through the middle of October. You can also feel secure knowing access to the campground is controlled by a gate with a keypad entry.

What can I find here?

In addition to the campsites, the campground also has a variety of amenities, including:

  • A swimming pool

  • A playground

  • A mini golf course

  • A basketball court

  • A gaga ball pit

  • A game room

  • A laundry facility

  • A dump station

  • A small camp store (complete with Hershey’s ice cream and ice cream sandwiches!)

The club house is complete with a foosball table, toys for the kids to enjoy, puzzles and board games, as well as a pool table. They also have a keurig machine for your coffee, tea, or hot chocolate fix. One portion of the clubhouse features a TV with movies for the family and a selection of books available for borrowing. If you happen to need something shipped to you while you are staying, the clubhouse allows for package delivery and free pickup.

The 'frog pond' is a great place to find frogs, turtles, and snakes

One of our favorite outdoor activities to do while we are here is to visit ‘the frog pond’. It's a small pond located just off the main campground loop that is teeming with wildlife. The boys have found turtles, frogs, and snakes - but fortunately they’ve managed to not fall in!

The campground is also pet-friendly, so you can bring your furry friends along for the fun. There are over a mile and a half of roads throughout the campground making it easy to take your canine companions on long, peaceful walks.

If you come on the weekends, there are a variety of fun, themed events for the family. We have been fortunate enough to take part in a Friday night potluck, complete with hot dog roasting and amazing desserts. In September, they have a Halloween trick or treat.

Navigation Tip

DO NOT come into the campground off of State Route 45 via Mill Creek Road. There is a very low bridge that is part of the rails-to-trails bike trail that spans the road. Instead, drive past Mill Creek Road and head south on State Route 45, then take a left on Jefferson-Eagleville Rd.

What's to do nearby?

Feeling like exploring? Then you are in luck, because the area is full of of outdoor activities and small lake towns to visit. Here is a small sampling of what's available -

  • Fishing & Boating: The campground is located on a lake, so there are plenty of opportunities to fish. You can also fish in the three ponds on the property. The best time to fish is during the spring and fall, when the water is cooler and the fish are more active. They have several kinds of boats available to rent at the office to explore the lake. If you are after some more advanced fishing, you are only a short drive away from Lake Erie.

  • Hiking: There are several hiking trails in the area, including the North Chagrin Reservation and the Geneva State Park. The North Chagrin Reservation has over 100 miles of trails, ranging from easy to challenging. The Geneva State Park has over 30 miles of trails, including a section of the Towpath Trail. The best time to hike is during the spring and fall, when the weather is mild.

  • Biking: There are also several biking trails in the area, including the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and the Ashtabula County MetroParks Trail System. The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail is a 112-mile trail that runs along the old Ohio & Erie Canal. The Ashtabula County Metro Parks Trail System has over 20 miles of trails, including a section of the North Chagrin Creek Trail. The best time to bike is during the spring and fall, when the weather is mild.

  • Visiting nearby towns: There are several small towns in the area, such as Jefferson, Ashtabula, and Geneva. These towns have shops, restaurants, and historical attractions. Our personal favorite family trip includes a beach day on Lake Erie at Fairport Harbor. Don’t forget to hit up the Fairport Creamery on the corner!

  • Visit “the Land”: We wouldn’t be Ohioans if we didn’t shout out some love for Cleveland. In addition to boasting the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, it’s the home of the Guardians, Cavaliers, and Browns professional sports teams as well as our beloved national park! There are numerous waterfalls and ledges to explore at Cuyahoga National Park. If you are a nature enthusiast, make sure to also check out the Holden Arboretum, home to numerous trees, hiking trails, rope course, and a 20 story tower over the trees! It’s also dog friendly, so bring your pooch along for a picnic and walk.

  • Wine trail: It would be a tragedy not to mention the Vines & Wines Wine Trail of northeast Ohio. Featuring more than 30 local wineries, wine lovers are sure to find their slice of heaven. Some of our favorite wineries on the trail are Debonne and Ferrante, both offer amazing food options to pair with their excellent selections of wines.

When Should I Visit?

The best time to visit Kenisee Lakes Thousand Trails really depends on your interests and desired activities. The campground is open from April until October, so you have the opportunity to experience every season except Winter.

We really enjoy camping here during the Summer and early Fall, when we can enjoy swimming, hiking, biking, and looking for critters. It's also an ideal time if you are interested in boating or fishing. If you come in the Fall or Spring, the weather can be mild so you’ll want to dress accordingly with layers. If you are lucky enough to make it during the Fall, and the leaves are changing colors (especially the maple trees), it will make for a beautiful and memorable sight.

No matter what time of year you visit, Kenisee Lakes Thousand Trails is a great place to relax and enjoy the great outdoors. So what are you waiting for? Start planning your trip today!

Satisfy your sweet tooth with a quick trip up to Marianne’s Chocolates & Cheese. They have the most mouth watering flavors of fudge in the area, as well as a variety of other snas, chocolates, and cheeses to enjoy.
